ITS vocabulary

ITS industry is not always the clearest field, there are lots of different smart traffic terms. Do you know for example what means a term Mobility as a Service which has got a world wide fame or a term Internet of Things? Find definitions for different terms below.

Automated car is also known as an autonomous car, a driverless car, self-driving car or a robotic car. It is a robotic vehicle that is designed to travel between destinations without a human operator. Fully autonomous vehicle must be able to navigate without human intervention to a predetermined destination over roads that have not been adapted for its use.

Potential advantages of automated cars would be for example fewer traffic collisions, due to an autonomous system's increased reliability and faster reaction time compared to human drivers, alleviation of parking scarcity with so-called parking pilots and increased roadway capacity and reduced traffic congestion due to reduced need for safety gaps and the ability to better manage traffic flow.

Big Data is used to describe a massive volume of both structured and unstructured data that is so large that it's difficult to process using traditional database and software techniques. Big data has the potential to help companies improve operations and make faster, more intelligent decisions.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) means obtaining and producing traffic and mobility infrastructure as a service. It includes for example streets, traffic fairways, avenue squares, parks and its contemplation, implementation, maintenence and everything related to its location and other data.

Internet of Things (IoT) means the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing devices within the existing Internet infrastructure.  IoT is expected to offer advanced connectivity of devices, systems, and services that goes beyond machine-to-machine communications (M2M) and covers a variety of protocols, domains, and applications.

It is expected that there will be nearly 26 billion devices on the Internet of Things by 2020. Most of the growth will come about analytics, applications and services.

Digitalization of the transport industry is a new global ecosystem where new types of industries are competing with traditional ones. It means also unzipping information to bits which enables saving, organizing and modulating the information. When you combine this with a mobile technology (eg. tabloids, social networks and cloud services) total industries will be tranforming.

Roaming in transport means roaming between different systems which enables "one door" payment for customer regardless which form of mobility they choose. Practically it should mean that payment should work out with same logic and credit purchase despite if you choose eg. bus, taxi, car sharing or/and private car.

Traffic Lab -project is an experimental project launched by the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications to promote a market in intelligent transport services. The official name of this project, which will conclude at the end of 2015, is Electronic Transport Services. Other Traffic Lab stakeholders, or the Finnish Transport Agency, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency Trafi, the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation Tekes and the City of Helsinki, will work together with other ministries, companies and transport sector organisations.

More information about Traffic Lab is available here.

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is a paradigm change in transport, not only for the customers but also for the transport system and its stakeholders. Mobility as a Service is a mobility distribution model in which all users' major transport needs are met over one interface and are offered by mobility operators. At best the customer can expect a promise of a service level without having to spend time in figuring the best way from A to B. Users will receive high-class full service at competitive price.

Typically, services are bundled into packages similar to those of mobile operator services.

Open Data is a raw information aggregated to public administration, companies, organizations and private persons. The idea is that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control.

Robotization means shortly explained the automation of a system or process by use of robotic devices. A term robotization is related to for example different robots, robotic cars, artificial intelligence, ambient intelligence and 3D printing. Robotization is growing up as one of the biggest transformation powers and Finland wants to be in a frontline to advance robotization in a road traffic.

There has been published also wider Robotic vocabulary which can be found here (only in Finnish).

Transport as a Service (TaaS) means overall service selection created by different vehicles (public transport, vehicles, rental, parking, taxis, shared rides etc.) and its purchasing and producing as a service.
